SEATTLE, Wash. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's tennis team won its program record fourth Western Athletic Conference match of the season after defeating Chicago State a 5-2 on Friday at Amy Yee Tennis Center.
 
With the win, UTRGV pushed its win streak to six straight and surpassed the three WAC victories won in 2015 and 2016.  
 
UTRGV (12-8, 4-0 WAC) grabbed the early lead over Chicago State (4-17, 0-4 WAC) by taking the doubles point. Senior Dominique Esparza teamed up with junior Doris Aleksovska to defeat Lorea Gamboa and Leshia Gadacz 6-0 on court two.
 
Sophomore Anastasia Belyaeva and freshman Lasya Patnaik sealed the point with a 7-6 victory over Anastasii Goncharova and Iesha Shepherd on court three. 
 
UTRGV kept the momentum going in singles as it won on four of the six courts. 
 
Junior Marine Darzyan picked up her second WAC win after defeating Goncharova. Darzyan got the 7-5 win in the first set before falling 3-6 in the second. The final set was a tight one but it was Darzyan coming away with the 7-6 victory.
 
Junior Dominique Ibarra improved to 4-0 in WAC play and extended her win streak to six matches with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Lorea Gamboa on court three. Belyaeva also won in straight sets as she picked up the 6-1, 6-4 win over Leshia Gadacz on court four. Belyaeva also improved to 4-0 in WAC play and her win streak has now reached nine straight. 
 
Patnaik also won her match in straight sets defeating Shepherd 6-4, 6-4 on court six. The win improves Patnaik to 3-1 in WAC play as she has improved to 10-7 on the season. 
 
UTRGV closes out its regular season on Saturday when it faces New Mexico State at 6 p.m. at the Amy Yee Tennis Center for a chance to win its first regular-season WAC title.
