EL PASO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's soccer team trailed the University of Texas El Paso (UTEP) in the second half but rallied to pick up the 3-2 victory on Sunday at University Field.
After a scoreless first half, UTRGV (2-2-0) grabbed the 1-0 lead with junior
Sarah Bonney's second goal of the season. Sophomore
Gina Steiner took the free kick and connected with Bonney, who knocked it in off of the cross bar at 53:57.
UTEP (2-2-0) answered with a pair of goals to take the lead as
Lauren Crenshaw converted on a penalty kick at 59:17 and then it was
Natalie Valentine with her first goal of the season at 67:01.
At 77:11, freshman
Emily Zapata took a long pass from junior
Katherine Stokely and snuck it past UTEP's goalie
Alyssa Palacios tying the game at 2-2.
About two minutes later, Bonney converted on a penalty kick for her second goal of the game, third of the season, for the match winner at 79:49.
Junior
Kinga Szemik (2-2-0) faced 11 shot from UTEP while recording three saves. UTRGV outshot UTEP 16-12 with seven of those shots on goal.
UTRGV will be back in action on August 30 when it travels to Coral Gables, Florida to face the University of Miami at 6 p.m.
