CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's soccer defeated the University of Miami 2-1 in overtime on Thursday at Cobb Stadium in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
UTRGV (3-2-0) kept Miami (3-2-0) at bay through much of the first half but it was
Morgan Asmussen who put Miami up 1-0 at the 41:28 mark in the first half.
UTRGV answered back in the second half by putting the pressure on Miami. Junior
Diana Ansah took the pass from freshman
Emily Zapata and scored her first goal of the season to tie it at 1-1 at 70:28.
Both teams frantically tried to put in the game winning goal but both defenses held up as the match finished regulation at 1-1.
In overtime, Zapata put a shot on goal but Miami goalie
Phallon Tullis-Joyce (3-2) made the save but moments later it was Zapata who knocked in the game winner with her third goal of the season.
Junior
Kinga Szemik (3-2) made three saves in the match.
UTRGV will be back in action on Sunday, September 2, when it travels to Corpus Christi to face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 7 p.m. as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union.
