CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's soccer team extended UTRGV's lead in the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union after playing to a 2-2 draw with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sunday at Jack Dugan Soccer and Track & Field Stadium.
UTRGV (3-2-1) now leads Corpus Christi 3.5-1.5 in the showdown standings.
Corpus Christi (1-3-1) got the scoring started as
Mariah Ramon picked up a loose ball in front of the net and scored her first goal of the season, which gave Corpus Christi the 1-0 lead at the 13:31 mark.
Junior
Sarah Bonney was determined to get UTRGV on the board. She took a shot in front of the goal that was blocked but she got the rebound and put it in the back of the net at 37:15 for her fourth goal of the season.
In the second half, UTRGV put pressure on Corpus Christi as freshman
Emma Lien Hapnes took one of UTRGV's five corner kicks an scored her first goal of her career at 49:55 giving UTRGV the 2-1 lead.
Corpus Christi outshot UTRGV 23-15 and 12-4 on goal throughout the game and the pressure kept coming at the end of regulation as
Madeleine Lozano scored at 85:48 tying the match at 2-2.
UTRGV outshot Corpus Christi 7-0 combined in both overtimes as the match ended in a draw.
Junior
Kinga Szemik (3-2-1) faced 23 shots while making a career-high 10 saves in the match.
UTRGV will return home to host McNeese State on Friday, September 7 at 7 p.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
The next South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union event will take place on September 9 when UTRGV hosts a women's soccer match at 7 p.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
