EDINBURG – Freshman
Emily Zapata recorded her first multi-goal match of her career leading The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley past McNeese State 2-1 in overtime on Friday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
Zapata, who now has five goals on the season, took the pass from senior
Malia Irvine as she crossed the midfield and took a shot that went over the outstretched hands of the goalie for the game-winner.
It's Zapata's second game-winner of the season after recording one against Miami on August 30.
UTRGV (4-2-1) trailed McNeese State (5-2) heading into the second half but at the 61:16 mark it was Zapata who tied it with the goal on the free kick by senior
Tuva Rolstad Nilsen.
Morgan Middleton scored at the 33:15 in the first half for McNeese State.
Junior
Kinga Szemik (4-2-1) made three saves in the match as she faced four shots on goal.
UTRGV outshot McNeese State 14-9 and 9-4 on goal.
UTRGV is back in action on Sunday when it hosts Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community, at 7 p.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
