EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's soccer teamscored twice in the final eight minutes to beat Texas Lutheran University (TLU) 3-1 on Thursday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
The match was tied at 1 when, in the 83
rdminute, junior
Sarah Bonney had an opportunity for a penalty kick and beat
Erin Davila on her right to give UTRGV the lead. It was Bonney's team lead-tying fifth goal and her team-leading third game-winning goal of the season.
Two and a half minutes later, sophomore
Gina Steiner followed with her first goal of the season to put UTRGV up 3-1.
Down 1-0 in the 33
rdminute, UTRGV (5-4-1) tied the match when sophomore
Katherine Stokely fed senior Sharyland alum
Daniela Cantu in the box who found the back of the net. It was Cantu's fourth-career goal.
TLU scored its lone goal in the 21
stminute on a penalty kick by
Jaclyn Smolik.
In her first-career start, freshman
Maile Lunardi (1-0-0) made one save.
UTRGV outshot TLU 34-5, including 17-2 on goal. The 34 shots are the third most in a single match in program history. The 17 shots on goal tie for the third most in a single match.
UTRGV closes out non-conference play on Super Saver Sunday at 1 p.m. against Omaha. Fans bringing five non-perishable food items to donate to the Food Bank RGV will receive complimentary admission. Gates open at 12.
