EDINBURG – Freshman Emily Zapata scored her third game-winning goal of the season to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's soccer team past Omaha 1-0 in double overtime on Sunday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex to close out non-conference play.
 
In double overtime with the match still scoreless, Zapata made a move to get past a defender at the top of the box and took a shot that hit off of hands of Omaha's goalie Ina Gudjonsdottir's and into the goal for the game winner. 
 
It's Zapata's sixth goal of the season and she now has 13 points on the season as she leads the team in both categories.
 
UTRGV (6-4-1) outshot Omaha (3-7-1) 17-8 and 8-5 on goal. 
 
UTRGV held Omaha to just three shots after the first half as junior Kinga Szemik (5-4-1) made five saves for her first shutout of the season.
 
UTRGV is back in action on Friday, September 28, when it opens up Western Athletic Conference play against Kansas City at 7 p.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
