EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's soccer team dropped its Western Athletic Conference opener 3-0 to the University of Missouri-Kansas City on Friday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
UTRGV (6-5-1, 0-1 WAC) outshot Kansas City (9-3, 1-0 WAC) 20-15 but couldn't convert on any of its 11 shots on goal.
Kansas City didn't waste much time to get on the board as
Rylan Childers scored her fourth goal of the season at the 1:57 mark. Childers took the pass from
Amanda Sampson in the box before taking the shot into the left side of the goal.
Later in the first half,
Reighan Childers scored her fifth goal of the season as she took the pass from Rylan Childers and scored for the top of the box at 22:38.
Kansas City added its final goal of the match just 2:27 into the second half as Rylan Childers scored her second goal of the match.
Junior
Kinga Szemik (5-5-1) recorded five saves on the night while
Afton Fennewald (6-1) made 11 saves.
UTRGV will be back in action on Sunday when it continues WAC play against Utah Valley at 1 p.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex. It's Super Saver Sunday where fans who donate five non-perishable canned foods can get complimentary admission. Gates open at 12 p.m.
