USAFA, Colo. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's soccer team fell 2-1 in a heartbreaking double overtime loss at No. 8 Air Force on Saturday at Cadet Stadium.
Tied at 1-1,
James Sims scored the game-winner for Air Force (10-1, 3-0 WAC) in the 105
th minute as he took the corner kick from
Luis Martinez and headed the shot into the goal for his first goal of the season.
UTRGV (6-4, 1-2 WAC) got its goal late in regulation as it found themselves trailing by a goal. Sophomore
Bryce Box took the pass from senior
Jaako Hietikko right in front of the as he scored with just 1:54 left in the match.
Air Force and UTRGV were scoreless through much of the match before
Klint Parker got the first goal of the match at the 79:42 mark.
Air Force out shot UTRGV 15-5 with UTRGV making its shots count with four of its five shots on goal.
Freshman
Trevor Schneider (1-1), who made his second start of the season, made three saves in the match.
UTRGV will be back in action on October 5 when it hosts Kansas City at 7 p.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex. It will be Scarves Giveaway Night with the first 200 fans will receive a wrist band to redeem the UTRGV soccer scarves. Gates open at 6 p.m.
