EDINBURG – Juniors
Kyle Edwards and
William Akio scored goals in the first half to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's soccer past UNC Greensboro 2-1 on Saturday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
Senior
Isidro Martinez got the play started with a steal at midfield as he found Edwards in front of the goal. Edwards faced a one-on-one with UNC Greensboro's goalie
Ricky Zarri and snuck it in the goal at the 10:07 mark for his third goal of the season.
Later in the half, sophomore
Arthur Rogers took a free kick and found Edwards in the box. After Edwards' header was blocked, Akio took the rebound and extended UTRGV's lead to 2-0 with his first goal of the season.
UTRGV held UNC Greensboro to just two shots in the first half taking a 2-0 lead into halftime.
UNC Greensboro got on the board with a goal from
Faisal Almubaslat at 53:15 for his first goal of the season. Almubaslat had one last effort as he took a shot on goal but UTRGV goalie
Andy Rios (3-2) made the save to hold on for the win.
Rios finished the match with three saves on the night.
UTRGV is back in action on September 13 when it travels to Conway, Arkansas to face Central Arkansas at 7 p.m.
