Women's Basketball Drops Heartbreaker at the Buzzer

EDINBURG – Jordan Holland hit a layup at the buzzer to send Utah Valley University (UVU) past The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball team 57-55 on Thursday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
 
Senior Nichele Hyman led UTRGV (8-9, 2-2 WAC) with 13 points and a season-high six rebounds.Senior Megan Johnson went a career-best 4-for-4 from behind the arc for 12 points. Graduate student Madison Northcutt posted her sixth double-doublewith 10 points and 12 rebounds.
 
Holland led UVU (10-7, 4-0 WAC) with 19 points, eight rebounds and five steals. Alexis Cortez scored 17 points. Josie Williams finished with 10 points.
 
UTRGV trailed 53-49 with 2:07 remaining. Senior Idil Türk made a three from three feet outside the arc and Hyman nailed another three to give UTRGV the lead. A pair of Holland free throws tied the game with 18 seconds left. On the ensuing possession, UTRGV lost the ball out of bounds with 1.1 seconds remaining. UVU called timeout to advance the ball and Cortez inbounded to Holland underneath the basket for the game-winning layup.
 
Northcutt hit a pair of layups and Johnson drained a three as UTRGV scored the first seven points en route to leads of 10-2 and 12-4.
 
UVU pulled within three at the end of the first quarter, but UTRGV opened the second quarter on a 12-4 run to push the lead to 27-16 on the power of three-pointers by Johnson, sophomore Amara Graham, and Hyman. UVU responded by scoring the next seven points as part of a 12-2 run to pull within 29-28 at the half.
 
UVU took its first lead at the start of the third quarter on a Holland layup, but a Johnson three helped UTRGV scored the next seven points to take a 36-30 lead. UVU regained the lead in the closing seconds when a Holland jumper made the score 40-39.

UTRGV tied the game at 43 on a Johnson three early in the fourth quarter before a Cortez three restored UVU's lead, which they held until Hyman's three with 46 seconds remaining.
 
UTRGV hosts Seattle U on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. Doors open at 6.
