EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley women's basketball team (6-7, 0-0 WAC) opens Western Athletic Conference play when it hosts California Baptist University (6-7, 0-1 WAC) at the UTRGV Fieldhouse on Saturday at 7 p.m.
The first 200 fans in attendance will receive rally towels. Fans can also get four tickets, four hot dogs, and four drinks for $25 as part of Friends and Family Night. Doors open at 6 p.m.
UTRGV wrapped up non-conference play against three of the best teams in the country in No. 12 Texas, No. 23 Texas A&M, and No. 4 Baylor.
UTRGV head coach
Lane Lord believes that even though they didn't come away with a victory, there were positive things that the team can use to build off of heading into WAC play.
"Finishing with three power-five schools, some people may say your confidence is going to be down," Lord said. "To be real honest, our confidence couldn't be higher. Against Texas we showed, here at home in front of a sell-out crowd, that we can compete at a high level. We gave ourselves a chance against a top-15 team in the country and then we backed that up with a great performance against Texas A&M, again another power-five school."
"I'll tell you what we learned from all three of those games is that we do have a good basketball team and can compete at a high level," Lord said. "What those teams do is expose your weaknesses. We did some good things in all three of those games and that's what we are going to take from it."
One of those bright spots for UTRGV was senior forward
Quynne Huggins, who averaged 16.7 points per game against those power-five schools. She had her biggest performance of her career against Texas where she scored a career-high 25 points.
Huggins was taken out of the starting lineup after the first two games of the season. She started to find her stride as the calendar turned to December where she averaged 15 points per game while earning a spot back into the starting lineup.
Huggins' play has elevated at the right time for UTRGV and Coach Lord believes that that she can be a big factor in WAC play.
"It took her a little while to get going but her talent is very obvious, especially with what she did against Texas," Lord said. "She was playing well before that and has continued that for us over the last month. Her and Türk together give us a pair of great inside-out three-point shooters. Quynne has elevated her game and we needed her to do that before WAC play."
WAC play started on Thursday with preseason favorite New Mexico State defeating California Baptist while CSU Bakersfield and Utah Valley also picked up victories.
UTRGV is looking to get off to a quick start in WAC play but will need to get back to playing fundamental basketball where they have more assists to turnovers and plenty of rebounds.
"In conference play, it comes down to possession games," Lord said. "We have to get back to not turning the basketball over. We have to take care of the basketball and secondly, we have to rebound. We not only need to get defensive rebounds but we have to give ourselves some extra possessions with some offensive rebounds as well."
