RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's soccer team beat the Chicago State University Cougars 2-0 on Saturday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.

Sophomore Emily Zapata scored the game-winning goal in the fifth minute when junior Gina Steiner stole the ball from Aanika Stevens, entered the box moving diagonally right, and then passed to the streaking Zapata who settled the ball on one hop and fired past a sliding Judith Sorribes (0-12-0). It was Zapata's team-leading fifth goal of the season, the fourth of which was a game-winner.

Sorribes finished with seven saves.

The Vaqueros (8-3-2, 2-0-1 WAC) added a goal in the 61stminute when freshman Anna Torslov took a rebound after a long shot by Zapata and put it in the back of the net.

Senior Kinga Szemik (7-3-2) made two saves for her fifth shutout of the season and 15thof her career.

The Vaqueros outshot the Cougars (0-14-0, 0-3-0 WAC) 18-5, including 9-2 on goal.
