Women's Soccer Wins WAC Home Opener

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's soccer team won their Western Athletic Conference (WAC) home opener 1-0 over the Grand Canyon University Lopes Sunday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
 
The lone goal came in the 27th minute when a long pass from midfield into the box was headed into the Lopes' (2-9-1, 1-1-0 WAC) net by Hannah Edwards. Graduate student Katherine Stokely was credited with the goal, her second of the year.
 
Senior Kinga Szemik (6-3-2) made one save for her fourth shutout of the season and 14thof her career.
 
The Vaqueros (7-3-2, 1-0-1 WAC) outshot the Lopes 12-5, including 4-1 on goal.
 
Lauren Garthwaite (2-9-1) made three saves.
 
UTRGV hosts Chicago State on Saturday at 7 p.m. Admission is complimentary, courtesy of Entravision. Gates open at 6.
