RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's soccer team played the San José State University Spartans to a scoreless double overtime draw on Friday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
The Spartans (4-10-2, 4-3-2 WAC) outshot the Vaqueros (8-4-2, 4-3-2 WAC) 11-9, including 5-1 on goal. Each team attempted four corner kicks.
Junior
Bryce Box attempted a team-high three shots. Senior
Kyle Edwards sent one of his two shots on goal. Sophomore
Jan Engels also attempted two shots.
Senior
Andy Rios (8-4-2) made five saves for his eighth shutout of the season and 13
th of his career.
David Sweeney (4-5-2) made one save for the Spartans.
UTRGV plays its home finale on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Western Athletic Conference Champion Seattle U, a team receiving votes in the latest top 25 poll. There will be a special pre-match ceremony honoring the graduating senior class. Admission is free, courtesy of Entravision. Gates open at 12.
