EDINBURG – Four pitchers combined for a shutout as The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team beat Houston Baptist University (HBU) 6-0 on Tuesday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
Senior
Jerred Quartier started for UTRGV (2-2) and didn't allow a hit until the fourth. He finished with three strikeouts in four innings.
Freshman
Colten Davis (1-0) struck out one in his first-career inning of work.
Senior McAllen Memorial alum
Juan Carreon II followed by retiring nine of the 10 batters he faced.
Sophomore
Max Balderrama Jr. finished up with a clean ninth.
UTRGV hit around against HBU (2-2) starter
Daniel Endsley (0-1) in the first, scoring on singles by juniors
Christian Sepulveda and
Nick Contreras. Then, with the bases loaded and two outs, freshman Vela alum
Aaron Galvan was plunked to force-in a run.
UTRGV scored two runs in the third on RBI-doubles by freshman
Jacob Flores and junior
Andy Atwood.
UTRGV added one more run in the eighth on a Galvan single.
Four UTRGV hitters had two hits, including Flores, Atwood, Galvan and junior
Conrado Diaz, who also drew a walk.
UTRGV opens up the Al Ogletree Classic on Friday at 7 p.m. against Portland at UTRGV Baseball Stadium. This game features the Raising Cane's Challenge.
