CHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball team won back-to-back games in Western Athletic Conference play for the first time this season by defeating Chicago State University 71-55 on Monday at the Jones Convocation Center.
Junior
Megan Johnson led the way for UTRGV (11-10, 5-3 WAC) with a season-high 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting while also grabbing seven rebounds. Redshirt sophomore
Amara Graham scored 13 points with eight rebounds and four assists while redshirt senior
Madison Northcutt added 10 points with six rebounds.
Kourtney Crane led Chicago State (1-20, 1-7 WAC) with 19 points and seven rebounds with
Tyeshia Bowers adding 12 points.
UTRGV controlled the entire game as it led wire-to-wire as it jumped out to the first lead with a three-pointer from senior
Idil Türk. After a basket by Bowers, Graham followed with a three-pointer and Johnson made a pair of free throws to give UTRGV the early 8-2 lead.
Later in the first, senior
Nichele Hyman made back-to-back layups to push UTRGV's lead to 17-8.
In the second quarter, Johnson scored the first six points for UTRGV as it led 23-16 with 4:09 left in the half. Türk followed with another three-pointer before Johnson scored the final five points for UTRGV with a jumper and three free throws to close out the half with a 31-19 lead.
UTRGV continued to control things in the second half as Graham and Hyman teamed up to push its lead to 42-28 with 5:42 left in the third with consecutive layups. Johnson followed with six straight points giving UTRGV the 48-32 lead.
UTRGV opened the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run for its biggest lead of the night at 62-40 to put the game out of reach.
UTRGV will be back in action on Thursday, February 7, when it hosts Grand Canyon for Believe in a Cure Night at 7 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. The first 200 fans in attendance will receive "Believe in a Cure" rally towels. Doors open at 6.
