CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's tennis team dropped its South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, match 2-5 to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Monday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Complex.
 
With the loss, UTRGV still holds the 23.5 to 12.5 lead in the showdown standings.
 
UTRGV (0-3) got out to the early lead as it took the doubles point. Seniors Michelle Walker and Doris Aleksovska picked up the 6-3 win over Camille Townsend and Kei Kato on court two. The freshman duo of Sandra Putz and Katarina Sasaroga made quick work of Maria Maldonado and Vanessa Reinicke with a 6-0 win on court three.
 
In singles, Corpus Christi (4-0) won five of the six courts to clinch the win. Senior Dominique Ibarra came through with the lone singles win for UTRGV with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Kato on court one.
 
UTRGV will be back in action on Friday, February 8, when it travels to Kingsville to face Texas A&M-Kingsville at 2 p.m.
 
The next event in the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, will be a women's golf tournament from February 25-26 in Corpus Christi.
