EDINBURG – Senior Chase Adams racked up a career-high 10 strikeouts to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team past the University of Rhode Island (URI) 8-1 on Friday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.

UTRGV (6-3) has now won four in a row.

Adams (1-1) pitched six innings, allowing just an unearned run on three hits and three walks. He struck out the side in perfect second and fifth innings.

UTRGV gave Adams all the support he needed in the sixth when, with the score tied at 1, UTRGV put two on with one out to set-up an RBI-single by junior Elijah Alexander and a two-run triple by freshman Aaron Galvan to chase Ryan Twitchell (0-1). Freshman Jacob Flores greeted reliever Mark Silvestri with an RBI-single to cap the inning with UTRGV up 5-1.

Galvan finished 2-for-4 with a career-high three RBI after driving in UTRGV's first run with a fourth-inning groundout. Alexander went 2-for-3. Junior Andy Atwood posted his team-best sixth multi-hit game of the season, finishing 2-for-3 with a double and two walks.

UTRGV put the game away in the eighth on a two-out bases-clearing single by senior Anthony Gomez.

URI (2-5) scored its lone run in the third on an RBI-single by Jackson Coutts, who went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk. Austin White also went 2-for-3.

URI threatened in the seventh, putting two on with one out, but Sam Ilario popped up a sacrifice bunt attempt and junior Conrado Diaz made a diving catch to his left for the first out. Junior Ricky Arevalo then got Josh Brodeur to ground into a double play to end the inning.

URI threatened again in the eighth, this time with two on and nobody out. Xavier Vargas hit a liner to right that junior Jacob Hirsh had to play on a hop. Hirsh came up throwing, however, and nailed the runner at second. Laurence Hill followed with a groundball to third that led to an out at second without the runner at third scoring before Sonny Ulliana popped out to end the inning.

Senior Harlingen South alum Zach Martinez struck out the side in a perfect ninth to end the game.

UTRGV and Rhode Island play the middle games of this four-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday at 12 p.m. Gates open at 11 a.m.
