EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis team won its final home match of the regular season and the finale of the UTRGV Spring Break Showdown 4-0 over Alcorn State on Sunday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
UTRGV (3-15) won on each of the first two courts and led on court three to take the doubles point.
 
On court one, freshmen George Hutchings and Clément Sarradin rallied back from a 1-4 deficit and successfully defended championship point to pull out a 7-5 win over Johnatan Parat and Gjorgji Popovski.
 
Court two finished shortly afterward, as graduate student Jake Davidson and freshman Samuel de Felipe Garcia, teaming up for the first time during dual play and the second time overall, beat Stojan Stojanovski and Ivan Matas 6-4.
 
Sarradin and freshman Georgije Babic dispatched of their opponents, Santiago Rocca on court four and Matas on court six, respectively, quickly in straight sets to give UTRGV a 3-0 lead.
 
Then, on court one, de Felipe Garcia came back from a 3-4 first set deficit against Popovskito win nine-straight games and clinch the match.
 
Hutchings, junior Mateo Schmit and freshman Te Kani Williams all won their first sets before going unfinished.
 
Alcorn State (1-21) only had a second set lead on court three when the match ended.
 
UTRGV opens up Western Athletic Conference play on Friday at 1 p.m. at New Mexico State.
