SAN ANTONIO – Senior
Idatonye Cheetham-West recorded one of the top long jumps in the NCAA while three throwers shattered the program record for women's shot put to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) track & field teams during day one of the UIW Invitational on Friday at Gayle & Tom Benson Stadium, the UIW Northeast Facilities and the Trinity University Track Facility.
Cheetham-West recorded a 6.40-meter long jump, which entering Friday's action, would rank No. 7 in the NCAA, No. 4 in the west region and No. 1 in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). The jump is also 0.26 meters better than the previous program record of 6.14 originally set by Hall of Famer
Tony (Bailey) Garcia in 1993 and matched by Cheetham-West earlier this year.
Entering Friday's action, the program record for the women's shot put was 15.06 meters, set by
Delilah Johnson in 1994. Sophomore

Diamond Thomas, and freshman
Samariae Bonds all surpassed that mark with throws of 15.43 meters, 15.35 meters and 15.30 meters, respectively, the top three marks in the WAC. Additionally, entering Friday's action, these throws would rank Hurst 54
thin the NCAA and 28

Thomas added the second-best hammer throw in program history with a first-place mark of 57.05 meters, 5.27 meters better than her previous personal best, the best in the WAC this season, 38
th best in the west, and tied for the 91
st best in the NCAA.
UTRGV added a win in the 1,500-meter run, as freshman
Kyra Keurentjes finished in a time of 4:41.76.
The men's team posted 14 top-five finishes. Three student-athletes finished second in their events, including sophomore Palmview alum
Ricardo Espinoza, who recorded a 13.65-meter shot put, freshman Harlingen South alum
Sky Tatum, who recorded a 51.31-meter hammer throw, and senior Sharyland alum
Brian Yanez, who finished the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:49.77.
UTRGV resumes action on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. with most events taking place at Gayle & Tom Benson Stadium. The discus throw will be held at the UIW Northeast Facilities.
