KINGSVILLE– The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's tennis team closed out its regular season with a 4-3 victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday at the Javelina Tennis Courts.
 
UTRGV (6-11), who hadn't competed in a match since defeating Grand Canyon on April 6, came out with a purpose as it took the doubles point. UTRGV swept through doubles starting with a 6-1 victory by seniors Dominique Ibarra and Marine Darzyan over Lisa Carvajal and Maya Donkor on court one. 
 
Seniors Michelle Walker and Doris Aleksovska followed with a 6-4 win over Thep Philavong and Vic Romanovskaia on court two. Freshman Sandra Putz and Katarina Sasaroga closed out doubles play with a 7-5 victory over Valerie Ruiz and Loren Tristan.
 
In singles, Texas A&M-Kingsville (11-7) opened with a victory on court two but Ibarra quickly answered with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Philavong on court one. With the win, Ibarra now has 64 career singles victories and is now tied with Leah Viloria (1988-91) for the second most singles victories in program history.
 
Walker added a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Laura Montalvo on court three to push UTRGV's lead to 3-1 before Texas A&M-Kingsville won on court four to climb within one.
 
Freshman Nethmi Waduge clinched the win for UTRGV with a win over Ruiz on court five. Waduge fell behind early dropping the first set 1-6 but fought back to win 6-2, 6-2 in the final two sets. 
 
Texas A&M-Kingsville closed out the scoring with a win on court six.
 
UTRGV will be back in action on Friday, April 26, when it opens the Western Athletic Conference Tournament against Chicago State at 9 a.m. at the Brownsville Tennis Center.
