EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball team dropped the finale of a three-game series to Chicago State University (CSU) 1-0 on Sunday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
The lone run came in the second against senior
Jerred Quartier (2-1) when, with one out,
Reggie Brock Jr.and
Tyler Lowe hit back-to-back doubles.
Quartier went 4.2 innings, striking out three while allowing five hits and two walks.
Three UTRGV (20-11, 6-3 WAC) relievers combined for 4.1 innings of scoreless relief. Junior
Ricky Arevalo retired the only batter he faced to escape a two-on, two-out jam in the fifth. Junior
Kevin Palm followed with two innings of one-hit ball. Senior Nikki Rowe alum
Ryan Jackson struck out five of the six batters he faced in two perfect innings.
CSU (8-21, 3-6 WAC) starter
Rodny Valdes (1-0) retired 11 of the first 12 batters he faced while pitching five innings of two-hit ball, striking out four.
Joe Baier retired six of the seven hitters he faced before
Anthony Leedle pitched two perfect innings for his first save.
UTRGV had three hits, including a double by freshman
Jacob Flores and singles by juniors
Christian Sepulveda and
Tyler Torres.
UTRGV is back in action on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Houston Baptist.
