CORPUS CHRISTI – Senior
Diana Ansah scored her first goal of the season to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday at Jack Dugan Soccer and Track & Field Complex in the first South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, matchup of the season.
UTRGV earned three points in the standings to take the early 3-0 lead. The next event in the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, will be a volleyball match on September 4 in Corpus Christi.
With the match still scoreless in the first half, sophomore
Shentatious Knox connected with Ansah in the box as she found the back of the net at the 31:33 mark for her first game-winning goal of her career.
Senior
Kinga Szemik (2-1) made five saves for the shutout with four of those saves coming in the second half.
UTRGV was outshot 16-10 but put six of their shots on goal.
UTRGV will be back in action on Sunday, September 1, when it hosts UTEP at 1 p.m. at The UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex. Admission is free and gates open at 12 p.m.
