CARBONDALE, Ill. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's soccer team closed out non-conference play with a 4-1 victory over Southern Illinois University (SIU) on Sunday at Lew Hartzog Track & Field Complex.
UTRGV (6-3-1) and SIU (4-7-1) were quiet in the first half as they took a scoreless match into halftime.
The scoring got started quickly in the second half as SIU's
Liz Brechtel scored the first goal of the match just 57 seconds into the half for the 1-0 lead.
UTRGV answered back with four unanswered goals in the second half. Sophomore
Shentatious Knox tied the match at 1-1 at 52:19 with her first goal of the season.
At 66:39, sophomore
Emily Zapata added her fourth goal of the match giving UTRGV the 2-1 lead.
Less than a minute later, junior
Gina Steiner added her first goal of the season at 67:49 to make it 3-1 UTRGV.
Freshman
Anna Torlsovput the finishing touches on the scoring with her second goal of the season at 73:35 to put the match away.
UTRGV put the pressure on SIU with 25 total shots and 13 shots on goal compared to SIU's six shots and four on goal.
UTRGV will open Western Athletic Conference play on October 4 when it hits the road to face Kansas City at 7 p.m.
