LUBBOCK – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team fell 0-7 to Texas Tech University on Monday at the Lubbock Country Club.
 
Texas Tech (2-0) grabbed the early lead after taking the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. 
 
After Texas Tech added points at No. 3 and No. 1 singles, the Vaqueros (0-2) battled throughout singles as junior Alberto Mello took his match against Connor Johnson at No. 4 singles Mello to three sets. After falling in the first set 0-6, Mello answered with a 6-2 win in the second before falling 3-6 in the third allowing Texas Tech to clinch the win.
 
Sophomore Samuel de Felipe Garcia opened his match at No. 2 singles with a 6-4 win in the first set against Reed Collier but fell 6-4 in the second and 6-3 in the third. 
 
Texas Tech added another win at No. 5 singles before senior Mateo Schmit went the distance with Justin Bloss at No. 6 singles. Schmit opened with a 6-4 win in the first set before falling 1-6 in the second. The tiebreaker was a tight one but Schmit fell 9-11 to close out the match. 
 
The Vaqueros will be back in action on January 29 when it travels to Corpus Christi to face off against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, at 12 p.m. at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
