SAN ANTONIO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team fell just short against the University of the Incarnate Word 3-4 on Sunday at the Mabry Tennis Center.
The Vaqueros (0-8) won its first doubles point of the season to take the early 1-0 lead over UIW (3-3). The duo of sophomores
Katarina Sasaroga and
Sandra Putz won at No. 1 doubles as they defeated Jelena Dordan and Sara Djurdjevic 6-2.
The team of freshmen
Valeria Montero and
Kristyna Mamicova also picked up a win as they defeated Taylor Parkinson and Kinga Psut 6-2 at the No. 3 spot.
UTRGV got a couple of points in singles play as junior
Alicia Thal came away with the victory at the No. 3 spot. Thal opened with a 6-1 win in the first set before Djurdjevic was retired due to an injury.
Montero added the other point for the Vaqueros as she recorded her first win of her career at the No. 5 spot. After falling 5-7 to Parkinson in the first set, Montero bounced back with a 7-5 win in the second. In the tiebreaker, Montero outlasted Parkinson 10-8 to pick up the victory.
UIW won on the other four spots to pick up the win.
UTRGV will be back in action on Thursday when it hosts Laredo Community College at 1 p.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
