WACO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team fell to the Baylor University Bears 2-0 on Wednesday at Baylor Ballpark.
Junior Edinburg alum
John Henry Gonzalez (0-1) made his first start for the Vaqueros (3-6), striking out three of the first four batters he faced.
The Bears (5-3) pushed across an unearned run in the third on a two-out single by
Andy Thomas.
The Bears added a run in the fourth on a two-out single by
Hunter Seay.
Gonzalez pitched into the fifth, striking out five while scattering six hits and one walk. Junior
Ricky Gerik Jr. recorded the final two outs of the fifth.
Sophomore
Kevin Palm followed with a scoreless sixth and junior
Chase Bridges worked a scoreless seventh. Graduate student
Andy Atwood made his debut on the mound in the eighth, tossing a scoreless frame and recording his first strikeout.
The Vaqueros scattered six hits – singles by Atwood, seniors
Coleman Grubbs,
Conrado Diaz and
Elijah Alexander, and juniors
Freddy Rojas Jr. and
Eric Taylor.
Will Rigney (1-0) pitched three innings of one-hit ball for the win.
Luke Boyd pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save.
UTRGV opens up a 12-game home stand on Friday at 7 p.m. with the first of four games against South Dakota State at UTRGV Baseball Stadium. It's UTRGV Family Night. Parents and accompanied guests of current UTRGV students will receive specially priced $5 tickets. Current UTRGV students receive free admission to all UTRGV home games with a valid student ID. Current UTRGV faculty and staff can get two free tickets with an employee ID. The first 150 fans in attendance will receive orange "Our Valley Our Team" rally towels.
