RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team beat the South Dakota State University Jackrabbits 9-7 in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
Senior
Christian Sepulveda led the Vaqueros (4-7) by going 2-for-3 with three RBI, a stolen base and a run scored. Juniors
Darian Luper and
Jacob Hirsh each had two RBI while juniors
Freddy Rojas Jr. and
EJ Taylor each scored twice.
The Vaqueros trailed 4-0 after half an inning. They proceeded to load the bases on walks with two outs in the bottom of the inning against
Riley McSherry (0-2). The next pitch hit Sepulveda, forcing in a run. Freshman PSJA alum
Trey Guajardo and Luper followed with run-scoring walks and then Hirsh hit a two-run single to cap the inning
The Vaqueros added three more runs in the second on a two-run single by Sepulveda and an RBI-single by Luper.
The Jackrabbits (2-7) got runs back in the third and fourth innings on solo home runs by
Drew Beazley and
Carson Max, respectively.
The Vaqueros pushed their lead to 9-6 in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by graduate student
Andy Atwood. The Jackrabbits got that run back in the seventh on a Beazley single.
Senior
Ricky Arevalo (1-0) earned the win by racking up a career-high four strikeouts in a career-high 3.1 innings of relief.
Junior
Chase Bridges struck out four in 2.1 scoreless innings for his first save.
UTRGV and South Dakota State play game two of the doubleheader at approximately 6:30 p.m.
