RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team fell 0-7 to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, on Sunday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
The Vaqueros (0-6) now trail the Islanders (10-1) 31-14 in the showdown standings.
The Islanders took the early advantage in the match as it won at doubles No. 2 and 3. The duo of
Katarina Sasaroga and
Sandra Putz were on the verge of winning their match at No. 1 doubles but the match was stopped with them up 5-4 once the point was clinched.
Sasaroga took her match against Mariya Shumeika at No. 1 singles before falling in the tiebreaker. Sasaroga fell 2-6 in the opening set but bounced back with a 7-5 win in the second as she battled from behind to send her match to the tiebreaker, where she fell 4-10.
The Islanders won on the other singles matches to clinch the win.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Saturday when it travels to San Antonio to face UTSA at 2 p.m.
The next matchup in the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union will be a women's golf tournament in Corpus Christi from February 24-25.
