RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's soccer team recorded its first win of the spring by defeating the Rio Grande Valley FC Toros 2-1 in an exhibition match on Monday. 
 
"The past three games against pro teams, and the hard lessons we learned in those losses, put us in position to be successful tonight," UTRGV head coach Paul Leese said. "Our weaknesses were clearly exposed during the last three games, which allowed us to work on key areas that needed improvement."
 
Martin Tellez gave the Vaqueros the 1-0 lead with a goal in the first half before Alex Frank scored the second goal in the second half.
 
The Toros got their lone goal in the closing minutes of the match.
 
"I must give credit to the players as they have shown tremendous growth and learning in a short period of time," Leese said. "I am incredibly grateful to the coaching staff and management at RGV FC, Austin Bold and the Houston Dynamo in granting me the opportunity to develop my college players in such a fantastic environment. Our challenge now is to make sure that when we return in August for preseason, that we can pick up from this point and carry the intensity and learning into the fall season."
