PHOENIX, Ariz. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's soccer team fell 5-1 to the Grand Canyon University (GCU) Antelopes, who are ranked 17
th in the United Soccer Coaches rankings, on Sunday at GCU Stadium.
The Antelopes (10-1-0, 5-0-0 WAC) got the scoring started early in the match as Cameron Weller scored in the fifth minute for the 1-0 lead.
The Vaqueros (5-5-0, 2-2-0 WAC) answered back as junior
Reshaun Walkes scored in the 10
th minutes for his eighth goal of the season. Graduate student
Yusuf Cueceoglu connect with a cutting Walkes, who then made a move in the box to sneak it past GCU goalie Anthony Munoz tying the match at 1-1.
In the 23
rd minute, Weller scored his second goal of the match giving GCU the 2-1 lead.
Weller completed the hat trick in the 52
nd minute as he converted on the penalty kick giving GCU the 3-1 lead.
GCU added a goal in the 82
nd minute after a goal by Rey Gaytan and then added another goal in the 86
th minute after Maximilian Moeller found the back of the net.
Senior
Oliver Padilla (2-2) made a career-high six saves while Munoz finished the night with four saves.
GCU outshot UTRGV 27 to 10 and 11 to five on goal.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Saturday, October 16, when they host Houston Baptist University at 6 p.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex on Senior Day. Fans that are unable to attend can watch in the United States on
