RIO GRANDE VALLEY – Brownsville-native and freshman Javier Chavez scored his first-career goal to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's soccer team past the Houston Baptist University Huskies 1-0 on Saturday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
 
In the 61^st minute, graduate student Yusuf Cueceoglu sent a corner kick into the box. Chavez dove to his right and headed the ball past Ciro Calderon (0-6-0) for the game-winning goal.
 
The Vaqueros (6-5-0, 3-2-0 WAC) applied pressure throughout the match, outshooting the Huskies (2-11-0, 0-6-0 WAC) 17-3.
 
Senior Oliver Padilla (3-2-0) made one save for his second shutout of the season, both of which have come during Western Athletic Conference play. 
 
UTRGV is back in action on Friday at 1 p.m. against San José State at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex. Those unable to attend the match in person can watch in the United States on ESPN+ or internationally on the WAC Digital Network.
