RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's soccer team fell to the San José State University Spartans 2-1 on Friday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
The Spartans (7-5-2, 5-1-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 12
th minute on a
Rudi Castro goal, but less than three minutes later, junior
Jan Engels fired a laser into the back of the net to tie the match.
It was Engels' third goal of the season and the first assists for sophomores
Raul Carillo and PSJA Southwest alum
Jose Cantu.
That was it until the 58
th minute when
Max Allen scored the game-winning goal.
Eric Waltz (1-2-1) played 65 shutout minutes in relief, making four saves.
Senior
Oliver Padilla (3-3-0) finished with two saves.
The Spartans outshot the Vaqueros (6-6-0, 3-3-0 WAC) 17-14, although the Vaqueros held the edge in shots on goal, 6-4.
UTRGV plays the home finale on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Seattle U at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex. Those unable to attend the match in person can watch in the United States on
