RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's soccer team dropped the home finale to the Seattle U Redhawks 3-2 on Sunday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
The Vaqueros (6-7-0, 3-4-0 WAC) scored their first goal in the 56
th minute. Sophomore
Michael Washington received a pass at the top of the box and touched the ball to junior
Reshaun Walkes, who came up from the left side and took the ball to the side of the box before finding the cutting Washington, who sent the ball on the ground past the diving
Akili Kasim (9-7-0) to make the score 2-1.
It was Washington's third goal and Walkes' fifth assist of the season.
The Redhawks (9-7-0, 4-3-0 WAC) extended their lead to 3-1 in the 65
th minute on a penalty kick goal by
Hal Uderitz, but less than five minutes later, junior
Dion Johnston sent a shot toward that goal that was punched away by a diving Kasim. The ball landed at the feet of junior
Jan Engels, who settled the ball and then shot it into the back of the net to make the score 3-2.
Engels now has four goals this season.
The Vaqueros outshot the Redhawks 20-8, including 9-6 on goal. The Vaqueros also led in corner kicks 5-1.
Engels attempted a match-high five shots (two on goal). Graduate student
Yusuf Cueceoglu attempted four shots (one on goal). Walkes attempted three shots (two on goal). Johnston also attempted three shots (one on goal).
Kasim finished with seven saves.
The Redhawks got the scoring started in the second minute on a
Noe Meza goal assisted by
Alex Acton-Petronotis.
The Redhawks went up 2-0 22 minutes later courtesy of a
James Morris goal on assists by
Levonte Johnson and
Declan McGlynn.
Senior
Oliver Padilla (3-4-0) finished with three saves.
UTRGV plays its final three matches of the regular season on the road, starting Friday at 8 p.m. at Dixie State. Fans can watch in the United States on

WAC Digital Network.
