ST. GEORGE, Utah – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's soccer team found their groove offensively defeating the Dixie State University Trailblazers 3-0 on Friday at Greater Zion Stadium.
The Vaqueros (7-7, 4-4 WAC) got things rolling quickly in the first half. Sophomore
Michael Washington took the loose ball in the midfield and then connected with junior
Reshaun Walkes who then touched it over to graduate student
Yusuf Cueceoglu, who found himself one-on-one against Trailblazers' goalie Jakob Moore
. Cueceoglu then found the back of the net for his fifth goal of the season just seconds after kickoff for the 1-0 lead.
Later in the first half, sophomore
Jose Cantu connected with Walkes in the box, but this time he found a cutting sophomore
Martin Tellez as he found the far end of the goal giving UTRGV the 2-0 lead in the 35
th minute.
The Trailblazers (2-13-1, 1-7-1 WAC) were held to just two shots in the first half as UTRGV goalie
Oliver Padilla (4-4) made a save on the only shot on goal.
In the second half, the Vaqueros kept the Trailblazers at bay but added an extra goal of their own. Coming off a corner kick, junior
Jan Engels found junior
Moiad Ankir as he sent a pass towards the box and found a streaking freshman
Javier Chavez who tapped it into the goal in the 80th minute for the 3-0 lead.
Padilla finished with two saves as he earned his third shutout of the season. Moore recorded just one save on the night.
The Vaqueros outshot the Trailblazers 14 to six and six to three on goal.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Sunday when they travel to Las Vegas to face UNLV at 3 p.m. at Johann Memorial Field.
