Women's Tennis Set for First WAC Cluster This Weekend

ST. GEORGE, Utah – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team gets its first taste of Western Athletic Conference action in the first WAC Cluster of the season hosted by Dixie State. 
 
UTRGV will face New Mexico State on Friday at 12:30 p.m. at the Trailblazer Tennis Courts and then will face Chicago State on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
 
Last Time Out
UTRGV fell to Sam Houston State 1-6 in a match that was rescheduled from earlier this season. 
 
The Vaqueros (2-9) won their doubles match at the No. 2 spot as the team of redshirt sophomore Katarina Sasaroga and freshman Isabelle Bahr defeated Constandena Nicolaou and Andrijana Brkic 6-3. 
 
The Bearkats (9-2) took the doubles point as they answered with wins at the No. 1 and 3 spots. 
 
In singles, the Vaqueros got a win at the No. 6 spot as freshman Lea Karren picked up a three-set win over Petra Kaszas. Karren fell 4-6 in the first set but then bounced back with a 6-4 to force a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Karren cruised to a 10-4 win to give the Vaqueros their lone point of the match.
 
The Bearkats won the other five singles matches to clinch the win.
 
Facing New Mexico State
  • The Aggies are 1-6 on the season. 
  • They are coming off of a 1-6 loss at the hands of Utah State.
  • New Mexico State's lone win this season came against Seward County Community College.
  • The Aggies are 14-23 in singles play this spring while posting a 5-13 record in doubles.
  • Gavi Kalaga leads the team with a 5-1 record in singles while the duo of Kalaga and Harsha Challa lead the team with a 3-2 doubles record. 
  • UTRGV is 3-9 all-time against New Mexico State in a series that dates back to 2008.
  • New Mexico State won the last matchup 4-3 back on March 23, 2019 in Phoenix. 
  • UTRGV last defeated New Mexico State on April 7, 2018 when it picked up the 5-2 win in Seattle. 
 
Facing Chicago State
  • The Cougars are 1-6 on the season.
  • They are coming off of a 2-5 loss against Lewis University on March 11. 
  • The Cougars will open up the cluster with a match against Tarleton State. 
  • Chicago State's lone win this season came back on March 5 when it defeated North Central College 6-1.
  • UTRGV is 9-2 all-time against Chicago State in a series that dates back to 2009.
  • UTRGV won the last match up 4-1 on April 26, 2019 in the WAC Tournament host in Brownsville. 
  • UTRGV has won the last eight matches.
