ST. GEORGE, Utah – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team dropped the opener of a four-game series to the Dixie State University Trailblazers 7-6 on Friday at Bruce Hurst Field.
Graduate student
Coleman Grubbs led the Vaqueros (9-8, 2-3 WAC) offensively by going a season-best 3-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and one run scored.
Grubbs got the Vaqueros on the board in the second with an RBI-single. A second run scored on an error to make the score 2-0.
Grubbs hit his home run in the sixth to make the score 6-2.
That was the Vaqueros' second home run of the game, as junior
Freddy Rojas Jr. launched a two-run shot in the third to make the score 4-0.
Graduate student
Elijah Alexander added a sacrifice fly in the fourth to make the score 5-0.
Senior
Kevin Stevens retired the first seven batters he faced before
Mathew Ivancich reached on an error.
Jagun Leavitt followed with a fielder's choice and then Steven picked off Leavitt to end the inning.
Stevens faced the minimum 14 batters through 4.1 hitless innings before issuing a walk to
Lane Pritchard. One out later,
Shane Taylor singled to break-up the no-hit bid. Taylor and Pritchard then pulled off a double steal and Ivancich followed with an RBI-single to bring the Trailblazers (3-10, 2-3 WAC) to within 5-2.
Ivancich finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
In the seventh,
Tyler Hollow was plunked with the bases loaded to force-in a run.
In the eighth, Pritchard hit an RBI-single, Taylor drew a bases-loaded and Leavitt bunted home a run to tie the game at 6.
The Trailblazers walked off winners in the ninth on an RBI-single by
Tyson Fisher off of junior
Tyler Kisner (0-1).
That made a winner of
Brayden Bonner (2-0), who retired both batters he faced.
