RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's soccer fell to the Utah Valley University Wolverines 3-1 on Thursday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
The Vaqueros (4-2-2, 1-2-1 WAC) trailed 1-0 toward the end of the first half when Wolverines (5-2-1, 4-1-0 WAC) goalkeeper
Isabel Jones-Dawe (4-2-1) had control of the ball. Sophomore
Jacqueline Zapata pressured the keeper, causing Jones-Dawe to boot the ball out of play. Shortly after the Vaqueros threw the ball in, they got a corner kick, which led to freshman
Libby Beilfuss sending the ball to junior Brownsville Pace alum
Kryssie Rivera who scored her first-career goal to tie the match.
Amber Tripp scored the game-winning goal for Wolverines in the 69
th minute off a feed by
Nicole Ray.
Tripp added another goal in the 78
th minute off a pass by
London Miller.
The Wolverines started the scoring in the 25
th minute when Ray stole a pass and shot from the right side of the box.
Sophomore
Maile Lunardi (4-2-2) made seven saves.
The Wolverines outshot the Vaqueros 11-6, including 10-1 on goal.
UTRGV and Utah Valley complete the series on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex. A limited number of seats are available as UTRGV Athletics is capping capacity at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex at 150 fans.
