OREM, Utah – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's soccer team scored three goals in the first half to defeat the Utah Valley University (UVU) Wolverines 3-1 on Friday at Clyde Field. 
 
The Vaqueros (2-0-1, 2-0-1 WAC) took control early in the match as junior Reshaun Walkes took a pass from junior Moiad Ankir and snuck it past Joseph Wheelwright (1-1) in the 26^thminute for the first goal of the game.
 
Ankir was at it again minutes later as he found junior Jan Engels who then found a sliding seniorWilliam Akio, who put it in the back of the net for his first goal of the season giving UTRGV the 2-0 lead in 33^rdminute. 
 
Less than two minutes later, Akio converted on a penalty kick, the sixth of his career, making it 3-0 in favor of the Vaqueros. This marked Akio's third multi-goal of his career. 
 
The Wolverines (1-1-0, 1-1-0 WAC) were able to get just two shots on goal in the first half but junior Trevor Schneider (2-0-1) made two of his four saves to keep them off the board in the first half. 
 
The Wolverines got their lone goal from Caleb Wight in the 85^thminute, which is the first goal allowed by the Vaqueros this season.
 
UTRGV was outshot 12 to 7 with but outshot UVU 6 to 5 on goal. 
 
UTRGV will be back in action on March 13 for its home opener at 12 p.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex against UNLV. 
 
A limited number of seats are available as UTRGV Athletics is capping capacity at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex at 150 fans. Tickets are not required as admission is complimentary and granted on a first-come, first-served basis. UTRGV students are asked to sit in the designated student section.
 
The UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex has capacity for 1,250 spectators. Limiting capacity to 150 allows for proper social distancing among fans, staff and student-athletes.
