RIO GRANDE VALLEY – Senior
Jacob Hirsh drove-in the go-ahead run in the sixth as The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team beat the Utah Valley University Wolverines 5-4 in seven innings in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
With the game tied at 4, senior
Elijah Alexander drew a leadoff walk against
Carson Brown (0-1). After a sacrifice bunt moved Alexander to second, Hirsh scorched a double down the right field line to give the Vaqueros (15-16, 7-7 WAC) the lead.
That made a winner of senior
Chase Bridges (3-1), who pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.
The Vaqueros trailed 2-0 after an inning. In the second, though, Alexander led off with a double and later scored on a Hirsh sacrifice fly. Junior Vela alum
RJ Ochoa followed with his second home run of the season to tie the game.
The Vaqueros took the lead in the fourth on a double by junior
Freddy Rojas Jr. He later scored on an Alexander sacrifice fly to make the score 4-2.
The Wolverines (5-22, 3-11 WAC) opened the scoring in the first on a
Kade Poulsen single and a
Drew Simssacrifice fly.
The Wolverines nearly added a run in the fourth, but Hirsh threw out a runner at the plate from right field to main the Vaqueros' 4-2 lead.
In the fifth, however, the Wolverines tied the game on a two-out, two-run single by
Brandon Luna.
