RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team scored in every inning from the third through the seventh to beat the Seattle U Redhawks 11-4 on Friday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
Graduate student
Coleman Grubbs led the Vaqueros (18-17, 9-8 WAC) by going 3-for-4 with a walk, a season-high three runs scored and a career-high three stolen bases. Graduate student
Andy Atwood finished 3-for-4 with a home run, a triple, a walk, two RBI and two runs scored. Senior
Elijah Alexander finished 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, an RBI and a run scored. Senior
Jacob Hirsh went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, an RBI and two runs scored.
Grubbs led off the third inning with a bunt single. He then stole second. The pitch he stole on went to the backstop, allowing Grubbs to take third. One out later, Atwood walked, setting up a two-out, two-run double by junior Vela alum
RJ Ochoa against
Nestor German (4-4). Alexander followed with an RBI-double to put the Vaqueros up 3-1.
In the fourth, Grubbs led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a balk and scored on an Atwood triple.
Hirsh drove-in a run with a triple of his own and scored on a suicide squeeze by
Carson Letterman in the fifth to make the score 6-1.
Atwood homered to left in the sixth to make the score 7-1.
Then, with the score 7-3 in the seventh, the Vaqueros scored four more run on an error, a Letterman sacrifice fly, a Grubbs single and a double-steal that brought Grubbs home when Atwood stole second with two outs.
Senior
Kevin Stevens (4-4) made the runs stand up, striking out six in 6.0 innings while allowing one run on five hits and two walks.
The Redhawks (13-18, 7-10 WAC) scored that run in the third on a two-out single by
Julian Kodama.
The Redhawks added two more in the seventh on a wild pitch and a single by
Justin Mazzone.
The Redhawks pushed across one more run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by
Jason Luke.
UTRGV and Seattle U play a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m., presented by Texas Organ Sharing Alliance. Game one is scheduled for seven innings while game two is scheduled for the full nine.
