WAC Tournament Central
LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Third-seeded The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team is set to face the second-seeded New Mexico State Aggies on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the NMSU Tennis Center for a spot in the championship match of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament.
The winner will face the winner between No. 1 Grand Canyon and No. 5 Seattle U on Sunday at 10 a.m. for a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
Last Time Out
UTRGV closed out the regular season with a 6-1 victory over Dixie State in the final WAC Cluster of the season.
The Vaqueros (5-16, 3-3 WAC) opened up play by taking the early advantage after doubles. The duo
Isabelle Bahr and
Katarina Sasaroga kicked off doubles with a 6-4 win over Kyra Harames and Sabrina Longson at the No. 1 spot.
Ana Platisa and
Sandra Putz then clinched the point with a 6-4 win over Alexandra Hildreth and Ya-Chi Hsu at the No. 3 spot giving the Vaqueros the 1-0 lead.
In singles, Bahr gave UTRGV the 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Harames at the No. 1 spot.
Kristyna Mamicova extended the Vaqueros lead with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Rachel Mellor at the No. 4 spot.
Platisa then clinched the win for UTRGV with a 7-2, 7-6 over Emma Templeton at the No. 5 spot for its second-straight win.
The Trailblazers (5-15, 2-4 WAC) got their lone point at the No. 2 singles spot.
Karren added to the Vaqueros lead with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Longson at the No. 3 spot to make it 5-1.
Putz then closed out the scoring with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Juliana Honczaruk at the No. 6 spot.
WAC Honors
- The Vaqueros took home six WAC honors as voted on by the WAC head coaches.
- Isabelle Bahr was voted the WAC Freshman of the Year.
- Sandra Putz was named to the All-WAC Second Team in singles.
- Katarina Sasaroga earned All-WAC Honorable Mention.
- Lea Karren earned All-WAC Honorable Mention.
- Valeria Montero earned All-WAC Honorable Mention.
- Bahr was also earned All-WAC Honorable Mention.
Facing New Mexico State
- The Aggies are 5-6 on the season and finished 4-2 in WAC play.
- They closed the regular season with an 0-7 loss to Grand Canyon.
- New Mexico State's wins this season came against Seward County Community College, UTRGV, Seattle U, Dixie State, and Chicago State.

- Peggy Rooke and Hannah Grossman have teamed for a team-leading two doubles victories.

Facing Grand Canyon
- Grand Canyon is 10-8 on the season and finished an undefeated 6-0 in WAC play.
- The Antelopes are coming off of a 0-4 loss to Northern Arizona to close out the regular season.
- Grand Canyon is 62-41 in singles play while posting a 28-22 record in doubles.
- Natasha Puehse and Jana Weiss lead the Antelopes with a 13-4 record in singles. Autum Prudhomme and Emilia Occhipiniti lead the team with a 13-4 in doubles.
- UTRGV is 3-6 all-time against Grand Canyon in a series that dates back to 2014.
- Grand Canyon won the previous matchup 7-0 in Edinburg.
- UTRGV last defeated Grand Canyon was on April 6, 2019 where they picked up the 4-3 win in Chicago.
