Baseball Drops Game One of Doubleheader at New Mexico State

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team dropped the first game of a doubleheader to the New Mexico State University Aggies 12-1 in seven innings on Saturday at Presley Askew Field.

The loss snaps the Vaqueros' (22-18, 13-9 WAC) seven-game winning streak

The Vaqueros scored their run in the fourth on a home run by junior Angel De La Cruz, his fifth of the season.

That was it against Chris Jefferson (5-5), who pitched a complete game, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out three.

The Vaqueros' other hit was a fifth-inning double by sophomore Jacob Flores.

After graduate student Kevin Palm (1-3) pitched a 1-2-3 first, the Aggies (15-25, 12-14 WAC) broke through in the second on a Brandon Dieter RBI-double.

Ronnie Allen Jr. hit a two-run double in the third.

Then, after De La Cruz's home run made the score 3-1, the Aggies put up seven runs in the fourth on two-run singles by Zerek SaenzCal Villarreal and Dieter and an RBI-single by Britt Graham.

The Aggies tacked on two more runs in the sixth on a two-run single by Tommy Tabak.
