Baseball Takes Game One of Doubleheader from Tarleton

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team beat the Tarleton State University Texans 9-7 in seven innings in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.

Graduate student Coleman Grubbs led the Vaqueros (24-20, 15-11 WAC) offensively, posting his second-career four-RBI game while finishing 3-for-4 with a home run and a triple. Postbaccalaureate student Christian Sepulveda went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Senior Jacob Hirsh doubled, walked and scored twice.

Down 3-0 in the second, the Vaqueros put runners on the corners with one out, setting up an RBI-groundout by sophomore Diego Ramirez against Luke Baley (5-4). After a walk, Sepulveda and Grubbs hit back-to-back RBI-singles to tie the game.

Then, with the score 5-3 in the fourth, the Vaqueros put their first six hitters on base on five hits and a walk. Ramirez led off with a single and Hirsh followed with a double. Sepulveda came up with an RBI-single and then Grubbs launched a three-run home run into the left field bullpen. Rojas walked and then graduate student Andy Atwood doubled, setting up a sacrifice flies by sophomore Angel De La Cruz and senior Elijah Alexander.

That made a winner of junior Ricky Gerik Jr. (2-2), who pitched a career-high 2.2 innings of relief, striking out three.

Gerik didn't allow a hit through his first 2.1 innings before allowing three-straight hits, the last of which was a two-run single by London Green.

Senior Chase Bridges recorded the final out for his second save.

The Texans (19-30, 12-18 WAC) scored their first five runs with two outs.

In the first, Green hit an RBI-single. In the second, Wade Raburn and Tyler Fowler hit back-to-back RBI-doubles. In the third, Dean Frew hit a two-run home run.
