RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's golf team learned this week that incoming freshman
Lars van der Vight won the Dutch Amateur Championship at Eindhovesche Golf Course.
"The feeling of winning this tournament, especially since it's kind of my home tournament and my home course, is amazing," van der Vight said. "It's kind of a going away present for me, which makes it even nicer."
The win qualifies van der Vight for the European Tour's Dutch Open that will be held from September 16-19 at Bernardus Golf Course in Cromvoirt, Netherlands.
Van der Vight posted a 16-under 272 over the four-round championship to win by two strokes in a field of over 100 golfers that featured at least 10 top-300 golfers in the World Amateur Golf Rankings.
Van der Vight opened with a first round seven-under par 65 and then followed with a one-under 71 before posting a four-under 68 in each of the final two rounds.
This is van der Vight's first Dutch Amateur Championship win after posting a 15
th place finish in 2019, the last year the tournament was held.
"I am very proud of Lars and how he put four rounds together against a competitive field," UTRGV Head Coach
Philip Tate said. "This only validates his focus, tenacity, and ability to handle the big moments."
