ESTERO, Fla. – Senior
Esteban Gonzalez tied for 11
th place with an individual score of 210 (70-71-69) to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's golf team at the West Bay Collegiate Tuesday at West Bay Club.
It was an all-around effort for UTRGV Vaqueros, who shot a third-round score of 274, tied for the third-best round in program history.
The Vaqueros finished in seventh place in the 15-team field with a three-round score of 847, trailing Florida Gulf Coast (831), Lipscomb (832), Troy (844), Louisiana-Monroe (844), Stetson (844) and Elon (846).
Playing as an individual for the tournament, freshman
Pelayo Fernandez Mortera had the fourth-best round of the day, moving up 26 spots with a six-under 66 final round. Fernandez Mortera's round is the ninth-best in program history and ties for the second-best round this season.
Sophomore
Brock Porter had the next best final round with a four-under 68, highlighted by an eagle on the 507-yard hole two. It was the third eagle of the tournament for UTRGV. In his final five holes, Porter shot four-under par with the eagle and a pair of birdies. Porter rose 16 spots on the final day to finish tied for 32
nd with a score of 214.
Gonzalez finished his final round of the tournament with a three-under 69, his best round of the tournament. He birdied his first two holes of the day and held his score below par the entire round. Gonzalez's 210 for the tournament ranks tied for 21
st in program history.
Junior
Gabriel Dulon Villoslada finished one shot behind Gonzalez with a two-under 70 on the day. Dulon Villoslada also birdied his first hole of the day and had three birdies on the back nine.
Freshman
Javier Domingo Calvo also had a strong final day, matching Porter with a four-under 68. Domingo Calvo finished the round with four birdies and zero bogeys as he rose 15 spots on the leaderboard.
Junior
Bogdan Sandrini shot a 75 for his final round, nabbing four birdies on the day.
The Vaqueros will close out the fall schedule at The Clerico hosted by Oral Roberts in Tulsa, Oklahoma, from Oct. 20-21 at the Cedar Ridge Country Club.
