RIO GRANDE VALLEY – Junior
Emily Zapata of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's soccer team became the program leader in career goals scored in a 3-0 victory over the Our Lady of the Lake Saints on Wednesday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
Zapata scored a pair of goals to give her 29 career goals as she surpassed Sarah Bonney (2016-19) for the program record.
Zapata gave the Vaqueros (4-4-1) the lead in the 22
nd minute as she took the pass from junior
Anna Barkey and snuck past Saints (3-3) goalie Samantha Valadez for the 1-0 advantage.
In the second half, graduate student
Victory Mayo added to UTRGV's lead as she connected with junior
Ana Recarte-Pacheco and found the back of the net in the 83
rd minute.
Zapata put the finished touches in the scoring with her second goal of the match in the 86
th minute as sophomore
Anna Torslov got the assist.
Freshman
Macie Blohowiak (2-1) made four saves for her second shutout of her career.
Valadez finished with one save.
The Saints outshot the Vaqueros 11 to 9 with both teams posting four shots on goal.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Sunday, September 19, when they hit the road to face Kansas State at 1 p.m. at Buser Family Park.
