BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – With less than a minute left in double overtime, junior
Jan Engels scored the game-winning goal to give The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's soccer team a 3-2 victory over the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Blazers on Friday at BBVA Field.
Engels scored his second goal of the match as he took the pass from graduate student
Yusuf Cueceoglu in the 110
thminute.
UTRGV outshot UAB 13 to 11 and six to three on goal. Junior
Trevor Schneider (1-2) finished the match with one save.
After a scoreless first half, the Vaqueros got the scoring started in the 56
th minute as Engels took the pass from junior
Reshaun Walkes and found the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
Three minutes later, Walkes added a goal of his own giving the Vaqueros the 2-0 lead in the 59
th minute. It's Walkes fourth goal of the season.
The Blazers answered back late in the second half as Curtis De Leon found the back of the net in the 80
th minute.
Nathaniel Louis, who assisted on De Leon's goal, found the back of the net to tie the match at 2-2.
The Vaqueros return to action on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. as they close out the Soccer for the Cure Tournament against Elon at BBVA Field.
