RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's soccer team dropped the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) home opener to the Sam Houston Bearkats 1-0 on Thursday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
The Bearkats (3-6-0, 1-1-0) scored the match's lone goal in the 26
th minute when
Caitlyn McDonald took control off the ball during a scrum following a corner kick and fired it into the back right corner of the net.
That was it against graduate student
Maile Lunardi (3-6-1), who made four saves.
Tatum Krueger (1-2-0) made six saves for the shutout, two of which denied junior
Emily Zapata, the Vaqueros' (5-7-1, 1-2-0 WAC) all-time leading goal scorer.

Nadia Colon, junior
Shentatious Knox, and sophomore
Anna Torslov also attempted shots on goal.
The Vaqueros outshot the Bearkats 13-to-8, including 6-to-5 on goal. The Vaqueros also attempted 11 corner kicks compared to four by the Bearkats.
UTRGV is back in action on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex against Stephen F. Austin. Admission is complimentary. Those unable to attend the match in person can watch in the United States on
